Steel is critical for the growth of economy. If India has to grow at 10 percent, then steel production has to grow from two percent to five percent. The challenges the industry faces are land acquisition, raw material security, infrastructure and logistics and environmental challenges. Mega plants are getting delayed as land acquisition is a generic problem. Indian producers spend less on research and development when compared to global norms. It is important to build robust systems and to manage risk and profits to have sustainable steel.
